Are you ready?

Thank you for registering for the 2011 Get the Gorilla 5k! We hope you enjoy your experience at Buccleuch ("Bucc-Lew") Park, as it is a favorite among locals for its seventy-eight acres of rolling terrain beside the Raritan River. Being that we're expecting 500-600 people on Sunday, we have provided both course maps (attached) and information (below) to ensure an organized, efficient, fun experience!

Order of Events

8:30-9:45 Registration
10:00 5k & 8k Start
11:00 Costume Parade
11:30 Kiddie Race
11:45 Presentation of Medals & Team Trophies

Registration

The Pavilion ("P") is where you pick up your bib number, get your t-shirt, enjoy food and drinks afterward, enjoy the costume & centipede contest, and dance to our DJ.

Please provide your "Essays 4 Equipment" donation at the registration table to receive your discounted entry fee. Again, acceptable donations are any gently used/ used running equipment (shoes, spikes, race shirts, shorts, etc.) that we can donate to urban high school track teams that make requests via essay submissions.

5k Race/Walk

The 5k course is a little more than two loops around the gravel trail. There will be mile markers and volunteers on the course. While the trail is a good width across, please remember to "stay to the LEFT, pass on the RIGHT" - just like you would on a track. When you finish, grab some water and come back to the finish line if you'd like, as the men's elite 8k will be finishing between 25-28 minutes--- cheer them home! Age group medals (three deep in five year increments) will be presented during the awards ceremony.

Costume Contest

You don't have to run fast, but you have to RUN in your costume if you want to be eligible for the contest. You may partner with others to enter, yet your group will receive one check if selected. At 11:00, please congregate by the parking lot near the pavilion (CC on 5k map). You will parade into the pavilion for the costume judges, who will collectively decide on the top three. We will announce the winners during the awards ceremony, and you will receive your prize money ($200- 1st, $150- 2nd, $100- 3rd) right there on the spot!

Centipede Contest

Everything applies as the costume contest: run in your costume, congregate at 11:00, and winning centipede will be announced during awards ceremony. The difference: you three runners need to be adjoined in some fashion through the entire race. How you chose to be adjoined....that's up to you!

Elite Women 5k Race

Please go to the purple elite hospitality tent to obtain your race number, pins, etc. from GSTC Head Coach Chris Tafelski. There will be food and drink there for you after the race. Your course is the same as the open 5k, which is about 85% spike friendly. We will present the top five with special medals and team champions with a trophy during the awards ceremony. Prize money for the top three ($200, $150, $100) will also be presented during this ceremony.

Elite Men 8k Race

Please go to the purple elite hospitality tent to obtain your race number, pins, etc. from GSTC Head Coach Chris Tafelski. There will be food and drink there for you after the race. Your race will be a little over three laps around the park, and there are three moments (marked by circled dots on 8k map) where your course steers differently than the 5k course. The course will be well-covered with mile markers and volunteers directing traffic. Also, runners in the open race are being directed to "stay to the LEFT, pass on the RIGHT," so you should be able to pass folks on the RIGHT side of the trail if needed.

Please note that your third loop is shorter than the first two. When you get to the star on your third lap (see map), you make a right and follow the solid line (the gravel trail) to the finish line. The 8k course is about 95% spike friendly, excluding a few moments of crossing a narrow street. Top five medals, team trophies, and prize money will be presented during the awards ceremony.

Kiddie Race

Please bring your lil' ones to the common finish line around 11:30. We will have a short race (around 400m) and provide ribbons to all that participate!

Bathrooms

The main bathroom is near the pavillion and marked with a "B." There will also be a portajohn available closer to the pavilion.

Directions

Use the address in your GPS: 321 Easton Avenue New Brunswick, New Jersey 08901.

The Introduction GTG @ 11.13.11

Get the Gorilla 5k is one of the most unique races on the East Coast. Hosted by the Garden State Track Club, it will be at historic Buccleuch Park in New Brunswick. Between a costume contest for contestants, a kids’ race, prize money for the top three men and women, the East Coast introduction to the Human Centipede, and a running gorilla…how can you go wrong?

The Costume Contest Prize Money: 1st - $200, 2nd - $150, 3rd - $100

The Centipede Contest Prize Money: 1st - $150

The Charity Essays 4 Equipment (E4E)

E4E is a program that provides resources for low-income youth runners to be successful. The GSTC has partnered with numerous high school track/cross country programs in Newark, Camden, and Trenton.
